PPPoE

Learn how Nukta manages PPPoE fixed-line access, customer credentials, automated recurring billing, pre-expiry reminders, and FUP alerts.

Managed PPPoE broadband access

Nukta provides managed Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) access for fixed-line residential fiber, commercial broadband, and fixed wireless internet.

Rather than manually managing PPP secrets, IP pools, and queue trees on individual routers, Nukta handles PPPoE authentication, accounting, and bandwidth control automatically through cloud RADIUS. When your router is provisioned, the PPPoE service configuration is applied directly, allowing you to manage customer accounts, packages, and billing cycles centrally from the Nukta dashboard.

Core PPPoE management controls

For fixed-line customer accounts authenticated via username and password, typical operational controls include:

  • Compatible Packages & Credentials: Assigning PPPoE packages and issuing customer credentials (Users → Customers).
  • Expiry & Account Status: Tracking active, expiring, and expired accounts in real time.
  • Speed & Fair Use Policy (FUP): Enforcing per-line upload/download speed limits and data quotas without manual MikroTik queues.
  • Pre-Expiry SMS Reminders: Automated alerts notifying customers before expiration to reduce subscription churn.
  • Automated Invoicing: Advance invoice generation with customizable numbering prefixes.
  • Active Session Controls: Graceful disconnect (kick), pausing, or blocking sessions directly from Users → Active Users.
  • Router Assignment & Monitoring: Binding customers to designated edge routers and monitoring line quality.

PPPoE settings in numbers

Nukta configures and automates PPPoE operational parameters according to standard network best practices:

  • Pre-Expiry Reminders: Automated reminder SMS messages can be scheduled for 2, 4, 12, 24, 48, or 72 hours prior to expiration. You can select multiple intervals under Settings → Network → PPPoE.
  • Fair Use Policy (FUP) Alerts: Automated usage warnings sent to customers when their monthly data consumption crosses 50%, 80%, 95%, or 100% of their package allowance.
  • Auto-Generated Invoices: Enabled by default. Invoices are created automatically ahead of subscription expiry matching your configured reminder window.
  • Invoice Number Prefix: Configurable prefix up to 8 characters (defaulting to INV, formatting as INV-001234).
  • Monthly Renewal Calendar: A 1-month plan renews on the same calendar date each month (e.g., an account activated on August 4th renews on September 4th; January 31st automatically adjusts to February 28th/29th).
  • Accounting Updates: The router reports session data and bandwidth consumption back to Nukta every 30 minutes.
  • Invoice Duplicate Prevention: A new recurring invoice is never created if the customer already has a pending, partial, or overdue invoice for that billing cycle.

Customer home router (CPE) installation

When your field technicians install a customer's Wi-Fi router (such as a TP-Link, Tenda, or Mercusys CPE/ONT):

  1. Connect the Ethernet drop cable from the fiber optical network terminal (ONT) or wireless receiver into the WAN port of the customer's router.
  2. Open the customer router's administration interface.
  3. In the WAN connection settings, select PPPoE as the connection type.
  4. Enter the customer's Username and Password created in your Nukta dashboard (Users → Customers).
  5. Save and apply settings.

The customer router dials into your MikroTik, authenticates against Nukta, and connects immediately with the assigned speed limits.

PPPoE troubleshooting checklist

When investigating a customer connectivity inquiry, compare signals across the access path:

  • Customer Account State: Verify username/password spelling, account status (Active, Expired, Paused), and explicit expiry date in Users → Customers → View Customer.
  • Package Compatibility: Confirm the customer is assigned an active package of type PPPoE with valid speed limits.
  • Active Sessions: Check Users → Active Users to see if an old session is lingering or hung. Use Graceful Disconnect (Kick) to clear stale sessions and allow immediate dial-in.
  • Local CPE Configuration: Confirm the customer's router WAN cable is firmly connected to the correct WAN port.
