Captive Promo Banners

Display promotional announcements, advertising images, and video creatives on captive portal login screens, with impressions and click-through analytics.

Promote offers on the captive portal

To publish marketing creatives and service announcements on your Wi-Fi login pages, navigate to Communication → Campaigns in your Nukta dashboard.

Captive promo banners display visual advertisements, text tickers, and multimedia banners directly to guests and customers during the Wi-Fi captive portal authentication flow. These campaigns operate on your web portal and do not dispatch SMS or email messages.

Creative campaign fields

When creating or modifying a captive promotional creative, configure the following fields:

  • Campaign Name: Required string (maximum 120 characters). Acts as the internal reporting label. For scrolling text banners, this name is the exact headline customers see on screen.
  • Creative Type:
    • Banner: Scrolling text ticker (the default).
    • Image: High-resolution graphic placement.
    • Video: Embedded video clip.
  • Placement: Position on the captive screen (Top or Bottom). Campaigns previously saved with older placements (Middle or Sidebar) automatically render at the bottom of responsive layouts.
  • Destination URL: Optional destination link (maximum 500 characters) opened when a customer taps the creative.
  • Target Portal: Select which customer portal should display the campaign—choose between Hotspot Only (default), PPPoE Only, or Both (Hotspot & PPPoE).
  • Media Upload: Upload an asset directly from your computer (uploaded files take precedence over external URLs).
  • Display Size: Height for media creatives:
    • Small: Up to 120 pixels tall.
    • Medium: Up to 200 pixels tall (default).
    • Large: Up to 300 pixels tall.
  • Start & End Dates: Optional campaign run window. Leaving the start date blank launches the campaign immediately; leaving the end date blank keeps it running indefinitely (Always). If an end date is configured, it must occur on or after the start date.

Supported media specifications

  • Images: PNG, JPEG, and WEBP formats up to 2 MB. (Vector SVG files are prohibited for security protection against embedded scripts).
  • Videos: MP4 and WEBM formats up to 10 MB.

Step-by-step campaign creation

  1. Specify a recognizable internal name describing your offer.
  2. Select your creative type (Banner, Image, or Video) and screen placement (Top or Bottom).
  3. For image or video creatives, upload an optimized asset or supply a trusted HTTPS media URL.
  4. If the banner links to an external website, enter a destination URL that is accessible to unauthenticated guests.
  5. Select your target portal (Hotspot, PPPoE, or Both Portals).
  6. Select the display size and preview the appearance across mobile and desktop captive layouts.
  7. Set your start and end dates.
  8. Click Save Changes and verify the appearance on an actual captive Wi-Fi device.

Walled-garden considerations

Before authentication, guest devices are isolated from the broader internet by your MikroTik router's firewall:

  • If your creative embeds an external media asset or links to a destination URL outside your Nukta workspace, the guest handset cannot load it unless that specific external domain is allowed through your router's walled garden.
  • Prefer direct asset uploads (served directly from Nukta's high-speed CDN) or ensure external domains are whitelisted under Devices → Mikrotiks → Sync Walled Garden.
  • Always test the creative from a real mobile handset in an unauthenticated network state.

Impression and click performance analytics

Nukta tracks visitor interactions in real time to calculate engagement metrics:

  • View (Impression): Counted when the captive portal displays the creative. To prevent skewing metrics, impressions are rate-limited to one view per unique device every 10 minutes. (Previewing themes within the dashboard does not count as an impression).
  • Click-Through Rate (CTR): Calculated automatically by comparing total clicks against recorded impressions on image and video creatives.
  • Batch Sync: Portal impression counts sync to your dashboard database in 5-minute intervals, meaning dashboard counters may trail live portal traffic slightly.

Finding and tracking campaigns

The campaign overview provides instant operational monitoring:

  • All Campaigns: Complete catalog of creative campaigns.
  • Live Now: Campaigns currently visible to customers on your captive portals.
  • Impressions: Total aggregate views recorded across all portals.
  • Clicks & CTR: Interaction rate for linked creative assets.

Status tabs allow filtering by All, Live, Scheduled, and Ended. Each active slot on the captive portal rotates one creative of each type, refreshing every 60 seconds.

Removing media assets

To remove an attached image or video from an existing creative, click the Remove button in the campaign editor. Save the campaign to commit the deletion, ensuring customer portals stop displaying the cached asset immediately.
